SB79 Put on Pause by City Council
Governor Newsom recently signed Senate Bill 79 (SB79), which allows for the construction of multi-family housing near rail, subway, and rapid bus transit stops. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Weiner of San Francisco, is designed to create more housing supply, reduce housing costs, and reduce carbon emissions. The bill took eight years of work. Effective July 1, 2026, the law permits housing projects up to nine stories tall near certain transit stops and up to seven stor

Silver Lake Community Church Fills the Food Gap
With all that is going on nationally with regard to the refusal to fund much needed food assistance programs like SNAP, it is truly a blessing that Silver Lake Community Church’s Wednesday Drop-In program provides nutritious groceries and prepared meals for those who are experiencing food insecurity. For more information, please visit: https://www.silverlakechurch.com/food-and-housing-insecure Now is the time for all of us to lean in to do more. SLCC is not asking for food do

Slip Sliding Away
For years, soil erosion from the slopes on W. Silver Lake Dr. has covered the sidewalks south of Balmer with loose dirt. That dirt has made walking, jogging, running or using a wheelchair on that stretch of sidewalks extremely dangerous. Especially after a rain. Most pedestrians opt to walk in the street to avoid any danger, which is an even greater risk. SLT researched municipal codes to confirm what we already assumed: the responsibility of keeping these sidewalks safe and

Are We On The Level?
A SLT Newsletter reader sent our editor a question: “When will the SL Reservoir be refilled to its' original height?" We reached out to the LADWP and Michael Ventre, LADWP’s Senior Public Relations Specialist, provided us with a timely answer. “The refill operation will continue at Silver Lake Reservoir at a rate of approximately 900,000 gallons per day. The current reservoir elevation is 434.2LF, and we expect the filing to continue through May 2026.” We thank our partners a

A Well Kept Secret...?
Riddle us this: why has the announcement, purpose and calendar of Recreation and Park’s Park Needs Assessment survey been kept so low key? The survey began in January 2025, with the public comment portion closing on Wednesday, October 15th. SLT sends our appreciation to one of our supporters for bringing this to SLT's attention. We’ve reviewed the SLNC website but could not find any link to the Park Needs Assessment. (By the way, can someone please make the SLNC website usab

Street Lighting: Still Wondering Why It Is Out?
Everyone is well aware that street lighting in the City is suffering due to theft and vandalism. Sadly, this is noticeable all over Silver Lake. Concerns were raised at a recent downtown event with Miguel Sangalang, Director of the Bureau of Street Lighting (BSL). Sangalang is well aware of the issues with theft and vandalism. The City has over 223,000 street lights, with 400 different styles. These lights are connected by 9,000 miles of conduit and 27,000 miles of copper wir

Lingering RV
For several months, an RV has been stored on Armstrong and then on W. Silver Lake Drive. Residents brought their concerns to SLT. One homeowner complained that the second hand weed smoking, wafting from the RV and into home windows, was impacting the health of one of their children. SLT reached out to SLO Ramirez for assistance. Finally, in August, the LAPD placed a citation on the vehicle due to expired tags. It took weeks for the RV owner to adhere to the law, and move from

Update on the 101 Gateway Area
David Nguyen, from the Mayor's Office, has worked with CD13 to help prioritize cleaning the 101/Silver Lake Boulevard underpass area. More frequent cleanings are underway, one having been performed this past week. While the area is significantly improved from our reporting in the July newsletter, the area remains a hazard for those who live there and those who drive through. Per Nguyen, the area is being scheduled for an Inside Safe program, the City's program at combatting h

Hugo's Disgrace
The intersection of Silver Lake Boulevard and the 101 Freeway is known as the Gateway to Silver Lake – and is currently a disgrace to both our neighborhood and the City of Los Angeles. As it is now, it’s more like the Gateway to Hell , and not an entrance to one of the most iconic, quirky and classic neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Sadly, the area is home to an encampment where the residents live in a center median of about 7 feet in width. They inhabit a space between lanes

Vacant Wronske Building Brings Blight and Crime
We all are more than familiar with the ugly unfinished building at 2800 Glendale Blvd., owned and “managed” by Hardy Wronske. It’s been an eyesore for years and has brought anxiety and frustration to all who live within 500 feet of this monstrosity. The following is just a brief description of the hell residents of Locksley deal with everyday: “Hardy Wronske is known for building thoughtful, community-focused projects across LA, which makes the neglect at 2800 Glendale Blvd e

Thank You, Dawn Cotterell!
LADWP’s Dawn Cotterell, who represented the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex, has been transferred to another area of the agency. Silver Lake Together enjoyed working directly with Dawn, and appreciates all of the time and information she provided to our team and the neighborhood. We are happy to announce that LADWP's Michael Ventre, who has represented the electrical power side of our community, will now be handling all that Dawn did regarding the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex.

Time To Stick A Fork In It...?
Is it finally time to stick a fork in it? Yet another lackluster Neighborhood Council election season. Especially for Silver Lake. 21 board seats were up for grabs, with only 28 folks running. 3 out of 8 regional races within the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council (SLNC) were uncontested. To vote in an SLNC election, you must be one of the following: property owner, renter, business owner/employee, member of an organization, student, homeless person: all within Silver Lake boun
